ABOUT THE CHARACTER
∇ To say Jahan was born with a silver spoon in his mouth would be putting it lightly. Born to parents who invented several new programs and forms of technology that contributed to the dawn of the Internet age, the Poddar's fortune would only grow throughout Jahan's childhood, just as the Internet grew. Unlike the majority of Jahan's future classmates, his parents were far from the distant and cold figureheads stereotypical of their levels of career success; Jahan's parents took loving, dotting, and involved to entirely new heights with the birth of their only son. The depth of their love for Jahan is enshrined in the very name they so carefully chose for him--Jahan is Persian for "world" or "universe," because he was their world and universe.
∇ Jahan spent his early childhood in San Jose, in the booming Silicon Valley where his parents worked as part of the dot-com bubble. Though an only child, Jahan was never lonely, as his parents' companies frequently hosted family get-togethers where Jahan played with the children of the other geniuses of the Internet age. He also had a large extended family--though Jahan's father grew up in Mumbai and many of his relatives still lived in India, Jahan's mother and family lived nearby in Half Moon Bay, and Jahan saw his maternal grandparents and cousins on a near daily basis. Not to mention, for a family of the Poddars' means, Mumbai wasn't very far away at all--Jahan was a mere few months old the first time he boarded a plane to India to meet his father's family, and he's traveled there countless times since to spend time with family, and his parents also frequently hosted his father's relatives, creating a constant international shuffle of family coming back and forth across oceans. Perhaps one could easily surmise this, but Jahan's upbringing was quite sheltered and cushy. The only child of rich, loving parents, Jahan was more than a bit spoiled--particularly when he also had aunties and uncles and grandparents and older cousins dotting on him as well. None of this was intentional, but merely a byproduct of growing in a rich but loving family. Though spoiled, a bit naive, and privileged at least in terms of socioeconomic status if not race, growing up in such a loving environment also made Jahan extraordinarily kind, optimistic, and upbeat, which more often than not would make up for his rich boy foibles and win over the hearts of many close friends in the years to come.
∇ In 2001, Jahan's life changed abruptly. His parents had, somehow, grown restless with their work in Silicon Valley. They had no doubt the Internet would continue to grow and be perfected in exciting ways, but they felt the bedrock was all complete and the initial fount of innovation run dry. They also came to care deeply about access to the Internet--in many parts of the United States, access to the Internet was still incredibly limited, which seemed a problem in need of immediate remedy. As such, the Poddars relocated to a small town in Virginia to work for a company whose mission was to expand Internet access to remote parts of Virginia and neighboring states. To say Jahan was not thrilled about the move from sunny San Jose to Dunhaven, Virginia would be putting it lightly. There was also, of course, the extreme discomfort of being a brown kid in a southern state, which would be compounded by the events of September 11--right in time for the start of school, by the way. Jahan's family wasn't Muslim--not that he thought that it should make it okay even if they were--but no one seemed to know the difference. Jahan had never been easily overwhelmed, normally so outgoing and relishing the center of attention, but he suddenly found himself out of his depth, feeling self-conscious and uncertain of his new classmates and hometown that was so drastically different from his hometown of San Jose. Jahan was also without his normal support system of extended family, living far away from them all for the first time in his life. Jahan was pretty miserable and resentful towards his parents for a time, but luckily this horrible intermediary period wouldn't last too long. One day, Jahan was getting pizza and animatedly watching a soccer match from the TV in the corner when one of the Athena Academy girls came and sat down next to him. She asked him if he liked soccer, quizzed him on his knowledge as though she was testing him, then approved of his skills by challenging him to a match in the park. The girl was Vega Rodriguez, and theirs would become a friendship for the ages. In the span of an afternoon, Jahan had gained himself a best friend, which made everything else bearable.
∇ In fact, Jahan would come to rule Aurelius Academy. Once he gained the security of a friendship as strong as the one he had with Vega, Jahan's true personality began to emerge again in the first half of fifth grade, and it was impossible for his classmates not to love him for his robust sense of humor, penchant for mischief, and talent on the soccer field. Jahan became extraordinarily popular, but kept his actual friends group small and close--Vega, of course, was still at the center, but Jahan also became extremely close with [REMUS] and [PETER]. Neither were the super cool jock types one might expect Jahan to befriend at this time in his life, [REMUS] was quiet, timid, and studious and Peter a bit of a nerd, but Jahan liked them both more than he could even properly put into words, and suddenly, they were a foursome.
∇ There was always a great deal of speculation around the question of whether or not Jahan and Lyra were romantically involved. Some people even just assumed they were an item, when in reality nothing remotely romantic or sexual ever transpired between the two of them. Sure, there were times when even Jahan questioned himself--he loved Lyra and she was beautiful, after all, but whenever he found himself doubting himself too much, he would realize it was just other people's expectations getting under his skin. Lyra was his sister, and he just never looked at her in that way. There bond was deep and intense, but never romantic.
∇ In college, however, things began to change for Jahan. He started to mature, for one thing--being in a new environment was good for Jahan. At Aurelius, he always felt like he had to bend over backwards to fit in even long after he'd become popular--due to how things started out for him, he always felt somewhat insecure there and often compensated by being ridiculous. In college, Jahan didn't feel this pressure, likely due to both age and the school itself--or, perhaps also that his peers were maturing just as he was. Jahan mellowed out, but was still fundamentally himself.
∇ Jahan graduated college with a degree in computer engineering and (to the shock of no one, given how he was raised) and criminal justice --his "passion" major. Jahan also played on the soccer team all four years. Somehow, Jahan managed to bring all these interests together in order to make a career for himself. Jahan went to work for the Dunhaven Police Department, eventually climbing the ranks to detective where his computer engineering degree indeed came in handy. He also coached a peewee soccer team in town.
